Driven wheelsets
Driven wheelsets transmit driving and breaking torques given by the gearbox and the braking system to the rail track.
The "normal" driven wheel set is equipped with a gearbox. The driving torque is applied to the drive shaft or to one of the wheels by special designed couplings.
The driven wheelset design includes the interface to the gearbox coupling. Sometimes the drive shaft is also used as a support for gearbox. Since wheelsets are safety related systems, all torque submitting components and connections (couplings, wheel/shaft connection) have to be well designed in order to handle also emergency loads without failure.
Driven wheelsets by Gutehoffnungshütte Radsatz GmbH guarantee maximum tractive power available at all times. Lightweight designs with glue-shrunk wheels favours a reduction in power consumption and vehicle weight.
